So last night we couldn’t help but go a little crazy…. someone had left one of their mattresses out in the courtyard so Jenny had a great idea! Mattress + Stairs = fun! Don’t you agree? First we tried to slide down the stairs on the mattress, which proved difficult because the mattress didn’t slide too well. So then we thought “maybe if we put a bunch of mattresses on the stairs then we can slide down the mattresses” so we tried that and it worked fabulously! We put four four mattresses from the top of the stairs to the bottom and slide down in our sleeping bags! What a blast! I jammed my foot really bad once, but other than that it was great. But that was still just the beginning! Next, we took two mattresses and put them inside the computer room and then stood one up in the doorway and jumped into the mattress and onto the two in the computer room! HAHAHA! I almost peed my pants (or trousers!) I was laughing so hard! Then one of the girls had this idea to put three of the mattresses on the stairs and jump from the railing at the top onto the mattresses… so we tried that. It was fun to watch, I didn’t try that one, I just took pictures! Then we went to bed. It is amazing what a group of so called adults can think of to do for fun isn’t it?!
an american football! March 19, 2007
So last weekend while staying in Fishhoek, I finally found an american football! Not a rugby and not a soccar ball! An actual football! I was super excited! I had been trying to find one since I got here and realized that I had forgotten to pack my football, among other things I wished I’d have brought, and had instead left it in the back of my car! D’OH! So I finally have a football…. it is blue and yellow, instead of the normal brown, and is a little too small but it is still a football! Me and Ryan are thinking it would be a good idea to organize a football game before we leave for outreach, teach those none americans how it is done!

Kenya!!!!!!! March 12, 2007
So for those of you who don’t know yet…. I am going to go to Kenya for my outreach! I am super excited! So Courtney, remember when you asked me if I was going to go to a country where they spoke Swahili since I was learning it? Well, guess what! I actually am! Weird, eh? Anyways, for outreach my team will be going to Johannesburg for two weeks and then spend the remaining 8 weeks in Kenya. YIPEE! We’ll be leaving around the 21st of April and coming back to South Africa around the 30st of June. We should be booking our flights this week so I’ll know the exact dates soon. I can’t wait! KENYA!!!!
the agony and stupidity of me….. March 12, 2007
So I am sitting here with sore blisted feet, an aweful sunburn on the back of my neck that hurts when I stretch my sking by moving, a blistered nose, a bruised eyebrow and chin, and generally sore muscles. Oh the agony of my stupidity! First the slightly less stupid moments from this weekend that led me to this state. Well, surfing left me with a bruised face, along with other various bruises and sore muscles. It is amazing how much damage a surfboard can do in a wave…… Now on to the more stupid tendencies of me. I decided it was a good idea to walk to Kalk Bay from Fishhoek to get ice cream, it is only about a 20minute walk so it isn’t too bad. The only problem was that I was barefoot! Never ever walked 20minutes on pavement barefoot! I ended up in Kalk Bay with four HUGE blisters on the bottom of my feet, not to mention that fact that they were horrendously dirty! But I got ice cream! And i got to go to another YWAM base there and rest my feet for a while, and of course get a good teasing for thinking that “it seemed like a good idea at the time”! Needless to say I took the train back… and my friend who gave me the hardest time decided to take pity on my and let me wear his shoes to the train station. And if that wasn’t enough torture to inflict upon myself for one weekend, I forgot to wear any sunblock yesterday. Okay let me just warn you, just because the sun doesn’t look like it is out when on the beach in Africa is no reason to NOT WEAR SUNBLOCK!!!! Ouch. But the nice thing is that the pain of my feet is a good distraction from the pain of my sunburn….. when will I ever learn. WHEN?!!!
the cockroach March 12, 2007
So I saw my first cockroach here. It was tiny and a bit of a let down. Pretty anti climatic….. one of my room mates came out of the bathroom in a hustle so I went into investigate and found a bug crawling around in the tub. It was a cockroach. I did the brave baer girl thing to do and grabbed some toilet paper and caught the sucker. I was about to let it go outside when I thought “dude this is a cockroach, it will just get back inside and live for like another century and freak someone out again”…. so I flushed him down the toilet. Like I said, pretty anti climatic……
surfing…. yeah baby! March 12, 2007
So this weekend I stayed in Fishhoek, which is a city on the coast about a half an hour from where I am staying at Beautiful Gate. I got to spend the weekend there with my two of my roommates (one of my roommates, Tjitske, her parents came down from Holland for a couple of weeks and we got to stay the weekend with them by the beach!). So on Saturday I couldn’t resist the urge to try surfing… I walked into town, rented a board and headed to the ocean to give it my best shot! Boy was it fun! But killer on the arms, man, I need to start doing some push ups or something! I was beat! Though I did ride some nice waves, I just could never get myself all the way up on the board. I could get to my knees and the few times I managed to STAND I no longer had any speed and fell over. But it was a blast! And don’t worry, i didn’t see any sharks! The beach was very shallow there, which made gettin out into the waves quite easy. Oh, and the water was freezing cold like back home, so I was about the only one NOT getting hyperthermia
Good times. Good bruises. Good memories.
