So today I got to go out and take a drive test with the school to see if I would be able to drive the car, which is first of all a stick and second goes on the wrong side of the road! So shifting with the left hand sounded more intimitating than it really is (just so you all know!) and as long as you keep thinking “left, left, left” to remind yourself what side of the street to be on….. you are just fine! So hey everyone!!!! I can drive on the wrong side of the road! So you all might want to watch out for me on the road when I get back……. but until then I’ll enjoy driving on the left side of the road, it is kinda exciting!
mama Lindsey :) January 28, 2007
“Mama Lindsey” ….. That is what one of the little girls here calls me whenever I go play with them. She was my first little friend here. She is so adorable and the sweetest little thing! She always wants to be held and talked to and spun around. And whenever I ask her what my name is she says, “Mama Lindsey”! Huh, mama Lindsey…. I think I can get used to that!
The van that wouldn’t run… January 28, 2007
Today is Sunday! We all woke up early and got ready to go to church, IN AFRICA! How exciting! So we piled into the two vans that the school has, 11 people in each van, and we start to head off. The first van pulls out of the drive way and off it goes to church. Then it is our turn. We start to back up and… it dies. We start the van again…. and it dies. We finaly get it back up and out to the road…. and it dies! Again and again, it starts and then, nothing! So we finally get it parked again and all unpile out of the van! But that isn’t the end of the story! We all head back into the base. Reuben heads for his wife’s guitar, we search the base for all the music people have brought with them, and presto! Instant church! It was great! Reuben played guitat and I, believe it or not, helped lead worship! Then Jasmine shared something God had shown her. It was a wonderful morning at church!
Playing in the street :) January 27, 2007
Today, I got to play with some of the kids here at the base! They were so adorable!!!!! They were out playing in the front of the base with their “mamas” (the “mamas” are the ones that care for the kids). And don’t worry, they weren’t really playing in the street, they were playing in the paved area in the front of the base. Actually, there is a big fence around the base and a gate in the front. Anyways, back to the kids! They would climb on me and ask me my name and I’d try to say theirs. One of the little girls told me I had a funny name!!!! I thought that was great! Oh, these kids are awesome. But we only got to play with them for a short time because they had to go back to their cottages to have lunch. So some of us carried a few of the kids back to their cottages. The girl I was carring didn’t want me to but her down and kept giving me hugs after I put here down. And a little girl in the cottage next door came and gave me a big hug and told me not to go…. does that break your heart or what?! I gave her a big huge and told her I’d be here for a while and we’d have lots of days to play together. And actually her “mama” is Lorraine, who on her DTS a few years ago had a girl named Lindsey that she was good friends with! Just a little random fact that made me smile. Ah……… yes, this is going to be a good time!
How cool is that??!!!! January 27, 2007
So how cool is this?!!!! First, both of my roommates love photography…. so we are going to have a blast these next months with that! Plus, one of my roommates has the same birthday as me!!!!!! June 10th baby! Super awesome. And so many people in this school are musical so someone is constantly sitting around playing music or singing….. so we all sit around and sing and worship alot, it is great!
So how cool is that?!!!! Well, it is much cooler than this weather!
welcome to africa! January 26, 2007
So after a few too many hours sitting in airplanes and wandering around airports, I am here in South Africa! I flew in this morning to Cape Town and have now been in the beautiful country for just around 12 hours. I got to say hi to a few of the school kids who live here at the base. They were so funny! They were waving and dancing and just being silly to make us laugh! I’ve also gotten the opportunity to meet most of the other people here for the school. So far all but about five or so people are already here and we are having a blast! We have people from the USA, Australia, Finland, Holland, the UK, and Canada in the school (maybe some others I can’t seem to remember at the moment)! One of my roommates is from Finland, another is from Holland and the other two are from the USA. So that is going to be fun and a bit of challenge I am sure getting to know them better as the days and months go on. So far one of my highlights is that we have a ping pong table at the base! Okay, maybe it isn’t a “real” ping pong table but only a slightly too small table with a net attached, but I love it!
